Revenge of the Seagull

There was a item on our local television news station a few days back – people complaining about the gulls at Whitby and about the fact that they stole their fish and chips.  DUH!!

Revenge of the Seagull

I worry you, I know I do
for I can see the TV too.

You write to say you hate my stare,
don’t like the seaside when I’m there.

Well let me tell you, I live here,
best treat me with respect my dear,

For if you don’t I’ll seek you out,
dive bomb, attack, behave like lout,

I’ll walk across your roof at night
and in your hair I might well shite.

This town you see, is by the sea;
go elsewhere if you don’t like me.

  1. Funny rhyme! They do have that attitude 🙂 Of course they are beautiful strong birds, they also kill other young birds and I have seen cats with eyes picked out by them. But I wouldn’t go as far as to have them removed. Whitby is theirs alright 🙂

As much as I like to see the seagull flies,
I think it shouldn’t shit on my French Fries
probably it ‘s fair to share
I rather have them gone somewhere
    especially those that stare
    inside my window 🙂

    🙂 Big hug and love
    Ina

  2. Hehe! They can get quite big and vicious though, seagulls. They have similar prolems other places too, such as Brighton. However, I don’t really see what can be done, like you say, the seaside is their territory.

      Thank you Paul,

They can be big and intimidating Paul, but, if you go to Whitby you know they will be there – Get on with it!
For me they are part of the attraction.

      Good to have you visit
      David

  3. I like how you this poem is written from the seagull’s perspective. It’s funny too. I’ve seen this happen at beaches nearby my home. Once a family bought a lot of food from the restaurant and actually left it unattended outside on a bench and it turned into a feeding frenzy with the gulls. Everyone was hypnotized by the site because it took literally moments for their entire meal to be devoured. The look on the people’s faces when they returned from getting their napkins, sodas, and condiments was priceless – utterly flabbergasted. DUH, indeed!

      Big 🙂

      Thank you Cathy,

I am smiling too at that family – serves them right!!! When I eat my fish and chips in Whitby I generally sit under the bandstand – the seagulls find it more difficult to get at me there, although they will on occasion come eat from my hand!! 🙂

I envy you, having beaches nearby – perhaps some day I will go live in Whitby!!

    Hi David,

I absolutely love this! I think you’ve captured the gulls personality just perfectly. 🙂
I think seasgulls should get their revenge where and when they can. We are the visitors in their habitat, fairs fair I say!
I say that knowing when I’m at the beach I eat in the car with a flock of seasgulls on the bonnet looking through the windscreen waiting…waiting…*evil grin*…I share my chips with no-one! :-p
Thankyou for such a lovely laugh. I will come back to this poem when I need a good pick-me-up. 🙂

All my best wishes to you for a good week.

      Hi Tikarma,

I just knew you would enjoy this one. And now I have a wonderful image of you sitting in the car flaunting your chips in front of the seagulls!! 🙂
Just be careful when you step outside 🙂

I am always delighted when I can provide you with a laugh.

      Take good care of yourself.
You have a good week too

This is very good! I have to smile seeing you standing up for the seagulls,
    – while having developed a clever tactic to keep your own chips!
The real joke is that people caused this behaviour of the seagulls in the first place. If you know how hard it is for the birds to catch food it’s not to be wondered at, that seagulls are clever enough to work out how to get the food the easy way, – not to talk about people who feed them….
I have been to beaches where there are not many people (and no rubbish) and one can sit quite peacefully, with seagulls not even bothering about “the visitors” …. but with our population going up, and so many people building near seasides, I guess that will be soon a thing of the past too.
I’m all for seagulls at the beach !! 🙂

    Have a good week

    • belfastdavid Says:

      🙂 Thank you Vera,

The interesting thing at Whitby is that you only have to walk about a mile, to the end of the prom, to be able to sit on the beach ” quite peacefully, with seagulls not even bothering about “the visitors” ”
But the people who complain rarely bother to go that far – they stay close to the chip shops, the pier and the pubs!!!
And they do irritate me when I hear them complaining!!!

I could sit for hours on the cliff top watching the gulls seemingly enjoying themselves using the updraft to glide effortlessly in the air 🙂

We are at one in enjoying “seagulls at the beach”

I hope you are having a good week.

      With Love
      David

  6. 🙂 🙂 Cracking poem, David; some people do seem very put out by Nature just doing its thing. It’s like the folks I see teetering through the woods in their white trainers in the winter and grumbling about the mud. Not sure what they were expecting: a red carpet, perhaps. Super stuff as ever.

    • belfastdavid Says:

      Thank you Nick,

I often wonder what is in these peoples’ heads when they set out for Whitby – the seagulls are very much a part of what makes Whitby and, for me, they add to the charm.
When I am driving there I am anticipating the first sight of the Abbey as I cross the moor, the first smell of the sea and the first sound of the seagulls!!

And, to be honest, I am unlikely to go in July and August when it is packed with visitors – I much prefer to be there at quieter times 🙂

  8. Strange how human beings find the mere existence of other things a hazard, be it birds or otherwise…don’t think our perspective is quite on point there…

    • Thank you Michael,

There does seem to be a tendency these days to view nature as if it was some sort of computer game which can be tailored to our own whims!!

      David

  9. Brilliant David! Really put a smile on my face this morning, and beautifully crafted as always.

  10. David,

You made me smile. Yes, it is their territory. Fish and chips stolen occasionally is merely rent paid by squatters to land(sea)lords. 🙂

    Love,
    Shirley
