Looking for Alice

“That’s the hole” I said “Just there.”
Police Constable Brown
looked at me sceptically.
“She ran in, then disappeared” I said.
He looked at me again.

Perhaps it would be best, I thought,
if I do not mention the White Rabbit.

  1. Smiling out loud!! The perfect way to start my day.. You, are very clever!! Loved it!! Hugs David!!

  2. I have read this before and I loved it then! It’s written so crisply, concisely.

I remember you quoting from “Alice in Wonderland” or “Through the Looking Glass”, I’m never sure which, a long time ago.

I think Constable Brown would be well advised to read the books!

    Lovely!

    Love you lots

  3. Hi David,

this one made me smile, it would have cut the story rather short if you and this Police Constable Brown had played above part in the book 🙂 Like if someone had told little Jesus to keep well away from the temple, and help his dad constructing a roof?

Not mentioning the White Rabbit really would have been the best 😉

    Arohanui 🙂

  4. David, its a wonder PC Brown did not take you away to an old folks home 😆

    LOL…EXCELLENT !!!

  6. i’m probably missing something — but then again, probably need another cup or two of coffee! better if Alice were not chasing rabbits, is suppose…. it has been so long since i’ve read those books. recently read the biography of lewis carroll, though — quite the dandy

  7. Really, really good! Witty and original and unexpected.

  8. You have given me a much needed smile today, dear David. Thank you!

  9. The perfect start to my Monday – I love the ‘magical realism’ of this piece; a little gem (and I don’t mean the lettuce). Thank you, my friend!

  10. Lemme guess … you’re rereading (or have just finished doing so) Alice in Wonderland? 😀

    • 🙂 I will re-read both Alice books between now and Christmas – they are the perfect antidote to grey, damp, dark winter days 🙂

This poem was actually written some time ago but I was prompted to post it by reading your giant teacup ride blog 🙂

hi david, good to see your website is obviously thriving. Those alice in wonderland quotes are great, I remember you quoting the one where she is asked which way she wants to go and says she doesnt really care, so therefore it doesnt matter which way she goes.I forget the exact wording but im sure you remember it.Sorry no contact for a while, life always seems to get in the way! Hope you are well – Adam S.

    • ‘Would you please tell me which way I ought to go from here?’ asked Alice.
‘That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.’ said the Cat.
‘I don’t much care where -‘ said Alice.
‘Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.’ said the Cat.
‘- as long as I get somewhere’ Alice added as an explanation.
‘Oh you’re sure to do that’ said the Cat ‘if you only walk long enough.’

Really good to hear from you Adam.
      I trust you are well.

      David

  12. Hi! I grow more in love with your poetry each time I read a new post. Looking for Alice is succinct, tuned-in emotionally, a great small work of poetry. I will certainly be back soon!

  14. “Do you know, I always thought unicorns were fabulous monsters, too, but I never saw one alive before!”

Well, now that we have seen each other,” said the unicorn, “if you’ll believe in me, I’ll believe in you.”

David, I LOVE this poem…and the man who wrote it seems ok, too…

    Big Hug. xxx

    *Big Smile*

I do like this poem. It reminds me of how much I loved Alice in Wonderland as a child.
Reading this again for some reason has placed pantomimes in my head I can hear an audience here shouting out to PC Brown “She’s Behind you!!” :-)… and the faint echo of the Queen of Hearts shouting “Off with her head!”

Thankyou for the wonderful memories. This poem has so brightened up my day. 🙂

    • Now I am smiling too Tikarma.

I find I can get just as much pleasure re-reading the Alice books today as I ever did as a child 🙂

  16. love your sense of humor here… 🙂

  17. I have been blogging through your poems and feel as if wonderland is named belfastdavid, or something of that sort. When the grin of the chesire cat appears, I will be sure to inform it that delight is not found in a grin, but in a poem falling upward to serendipity.

  18. David,

I remember this from before, and it still makes me smile, mostly for the images it brings to mind.

I can see you in this–maybe wearing a top coat, derby, a look of frustrated idignation, and sporting a cane, like an English gentleman of the period. I know this would not fit the David of today, but perhaps in another time…

The one thing you must never do is follow Alice down the hole! Of course, it always okay to send the constable as there could be doughnuts at the tea party. 🙂

And now I can add another word to my list of things spelled differently across the ocean–skeptical.

    Much love,
    Shirley

    • Shirley,

You provided me with a real big smile by this comment.
I can do “frustrated indignation” but I am not sure I would suit a top coat, derby and cane 🙂

I can pass on the doughnuts – but chocolate brownies would be a different thing altogether 🙂

      Much love

      David
