Teddy Bear

Posted in Poetry with tags on July 31, 2011 by belfastdavid

I was up at 6:00am this morning – sat on my sofa, thinking deep thoughts (as you do) when this poem came into my head.
Don’t blame me, blame my Muse!!

Teddy Bear

“If you could be an animal, which animal would you be?”
“I would be a teddy bear.”
“You can’t be a teddy bear.”
“Why not? A teddy bear is an animal.”
“It is not so! It is a stuffed toy, it is not real.”
“Well it is as real as I want to be.”

“Well then I’ll be a lion and eat you all up.”
“That would be pretty silly, I’m a stuffed toy,
I wouldn’t taste nice, you would probably choke.”
“NO! I would eat YOU.”
“But I’m a teddy bear!”
“Hah! I’ll be an elephant and step on you.”
“That’s OK – I will just bounce back
to my normal self when you take your foot off.”
“I will be an alligator and swallow you whole.”
“Refer back to conversation about lion.”

“Well….Well I will be a gorilla. I will tear you
limb from limb and throw away the pieces.”
“My mum will collect all the pieces and sew
me back together again, she is good
with a needle and thread. Mind you, she will
probably get the ears in slightly the wrong place.”

“I will take you from your mum when she
is not looking and throw you in the river.”
“Oh, that’s good – I will float all the way
down to the sea. I like the sea-side.”
“But you will never see your mum again.”
“Somebody will find me on the beach
and send me back to her.”
“They won’t know where to send you.”
“Ah, my mum sews name tags onto all my stuff.”

“I’m fed up with this game. I don’t want to play anymore.”
“So the teddy bear wins?”
“I am going home now.”
“The teddy bear is waving Bye Bye.”

My poem ‘Living in the city’ has now been published in the e-zine ‘Speech Therapy’.
I am delighted.

It was the encouragement I received on here which prompted me to submit it  so thank you all for that.

Revenge of the Seagull

Posted in Poetry with tags on July 24, 2011 by belfastdavid

There was a item on our local television news station a few days back – people complaining about the gulls at Whitby and about the fact that they stole their fish and chips.  DUH!!

Revenge of the Seagull

I worry you, I know I do
for I can see the TV too.

You write to say you hate my stare,
don’t like the seaside when I’m there.

Well let me tell you, I live here,
best treat me with respect my dear,

For if you don’t I’ll seek you out,
dive bomb, attack, behave like lout,

I’ll walk across your roof at night
and in your hair I might well shite.

This town you see, is by the sea;
go elsewhere if you don’t like me.

Whitby Summer

He sits on a bench
adjacent to Captain Cook;
with only pencil and rubber,
depicts most accurately
St. Marys and the Abbey
on the hill across the bay.

Beside him a little girl
(his daughter?)
aged maybe nine or ten
draws with exquisite detail
their dog, a Jack Russell,
who sits on the grass before them

and warily eyes
the herring gulls
as they strut past,
look towards him with disdain;
know they have advantage
of height and weight and wings.

This is a dead computer

Posted in Blogging with tags on July 18, 2011 by belfastdavid

Hi All,

My computer died last Friday – defunct, gone, useless!!

As a result I have had to buy a new computer. In the process I have lost all my email addresses  –  so if I had yours please send me a message with your email address so that I can rebuild the address file.

I have also lost all my poetry files so I will have to see whether I can resurrect them from the wreckage or whether I have to key them in again (I have some backed up to CD  –  yes, I know I should do that more regularly!!!)

I have got one of my email accounts working again (the btinternet one), the other I can only access via webmail but I am working on sorting that out (fingers crossed)

I also have to learn a new word processor – this one has Word whereas the previous one had Works (I liked Works)

So quite a lot of work to be done.  The major thing I want to do is the poetry. I had a publisher possibly interested in publishing another book (the Whitby poems) so I need to get those poems sorted out. If the worst comes to the worst I have hard copies of all the poems so can always retype them.

In the meantime I will try to keep up with your blogs, but if I fall behind please excuse me.

And of course activities of daily living carry on just the same 🙂

My best to you all

Dog Days of Summer

Posted in Poetry with tags , on July 8, 2011 by belfastdavid

As the days meander through
long sun-filled afternoons
when a lack of breeze allows
the pollution of the city
to gather, unseen but deadly,
in the air outside my window

I sit upon my sofa
beside a writing pad
complete with list
which gradually,
or maybe not,
gets ticked off
as the week proceeds;

it is a measure of progress
throughout my days
which otherwise, if I let them,
could merge one into another
and all appear the same.

Cleaning the Living Room

Posted in Poetry with tags on July 2, 2011 by belfastdavid

Putting back the furniture,
I need remind myself,
once again,
that it does not mean
the end of the world
if the coffee table
is not precisely
from the sofa
and the armchair.

I recall
another room,
another time,
the look
of anguish
on her face
when I moved
the pouffe;
a relationship
which died.

Ah, but that
is another story,
for now
I must
gird myself
whilst I dust.
